Cryopreservation (Egg / Sperm / Embryo / Ovarian Tissue)

Cryopreservation is the procedure through which oocytes, sperm cells, embryos, or ovarian tissue are frozen and stored under specialized conditions for future use. This technique offers flexibility in planning fertility treatments and enables the preservation of reproductive material at the most suitable moment for the patient.

What is Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)?

Cryopreservation is the process of rapidly freezing reproductive material at extremely low temperatures—using methods such as vitrification—to maintain long-term cellular integrity. The procedure is used both in fertility treatments and for fertility preservation in medical circumstances or therapies that may affect reproductive function.

Oocytes, sperm cells, and embryos can be cryopreserved at various stages of treatment, depending on the therapeutic plan and medical recommendations. Additionally, ovarian tissue cryopreservation may be an option in specific situations, such as for young patients at risk of ovarian function impairment.

Reproductive material can be stored for extended periods without compromising quality and can later be used in fertilization procedures or fertility-restoration treatments.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)

Every treatment is built on a well-defined medical process, carefully structured and tailored to the individual needs of each case. The objective is for the patient to receive clear information, continuous support, and the assurance that every stage is explained in detail—from the initial consultation to the subsequent monitoring period. The entire journey is guided with professionalism, ensuring that medical decisions are made with full understanding.

Although procedures vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the individual situation and the establishment of a personalized strategy. This approach increases the real chances of success and ensures continuity of care throughout the entire journey toward becoming a parent.

Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue)
During the first discussion, we review your goals, medical history, and any previous treatments. I perform a complete evaluation of your reproductive reserves to determine which cryopreservation method suits you best.
If you choose to freeze oocytes or embryos, you will follow a short mild hormonal stimulation protocol, as long as your health condition allows. The oocytes are then retrieved and, if desired, fertilised in the laboratory with sperm from your partner or a donor. If ovarian tissue cryopreservation is needed, the intervention is performed surgically, under anesthesia.
For sperm cryopreservation, I collect and process a semen sample on the same day. If there is a severe male factor, such as the absence of sperm in the ejaculate, the material can be obtained through minor procedures such as testicular biopsy.
I use the vitrification technique to rapidly freeze oocytes, embryos, sperm, and tissues. Each sample is labelled, monitored, and safely stored in our cryobank, where conditions are constantly maintained for long-term protection.
When you reach the point where you wish to achieve pregnancy, I explain all available options. The cryopreserved material is thawed and used in the appropriate treatment — IUI, IVF/ICSI or CryoET — depending on the specifics of your case.

F.A.Q.

Cryopreservation (Egg/Sperm/Embryo/Ovarian Tissue) F.A.Q.

Starting a treatment or medical procedure often raises questions regarding safety, effectiveness, and its impact on fertility. This section provides general explanations to help patients better understand the working steps, what the procedure involves, and what results to expect. The information is presented in an accessible manner to facilitate a clearer understanding of the medical process.

If additional questions arise or if the individual situation requires specific clarifications, a direct discussion with the physician can offer personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to each case. Proper guidance supports informed decision-making and ensures that treatment proceeds safely.

Oocytes, sperm, embryos, and tissues can remain frozen for many years without losing viability. There is no strict time limit, but we periodically check the status of the samples with your permission.
Modern vitrification methods offer a very high survival rate. Most oocytes, sperm cells, and embryos retain their quality after thawing, provided they have been correctly handled and frozen.
Yes. Many women choose to freeze their oocytes while fertility is still at its optimal level. This option offers flexibility and greater control over family planning.
Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is particularly useful for very young women or for patients who must urgently begin oncology treatment and cannot undergo oocyte retrieval. I choose the appropriate recommendation based on your individual situation.
Yes. To obtain multiple mature oocytes, hormonal stimulation is required. The process is short, closely monitored, and adapted to your health condition.
Yes, in most cases. The procedure is recommended both before oncology treatments and before surgical interventions. Even men from high-risk occupations may benefit from freezing. Before freezing, I perform a semen analysis to evaluate the sample.
