Assisted Hatching

Assisted hatching is a laboratory procedure used in IVF treatments to facilitate the process by which the embryo emerges from the zona pellucida before implantation. Through this technique, the chances of the embryo attaching to the endometrium are optimized, and it is recommended in specific situations where implantation may be more difficult.

What is Assisted Hatching?

Assisted hatching is an intervention performed on the embryo’s outer membrane, known as the zona pellucida. By thinning or carefully perforating this membrane, an opening is created that facilitates the natural hatching process required before the embryo can implant in the uterus.

This procedure can be performed using various methods, including specialized laser technology, enzymatic solutions, or delicate mechanical techniques. The choice of method depends on the characteristics of the embryo and the embryologist’s recommendation.

Assisted hatching is used in particular situations such as advanced maternal age, increased zona pellucida thickness, vitrified embryos, or cases in which implantation did not occur in previous cycles.

Who is Assisted Hatching for?

Woman over 37 receiving assisted hatching due to thicker zona pellucida.

Women of advanced reproductive age, where embryo structure may influence the implantation process.

Assisted hatching recommended after multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts.

Couples with previous unsuccessful IVF cycles who require additional optimization of embryo implantation.

Assisted hatching for patients using previously frozen or thawed embryos.

Situations in which the zona pellucida is thicker or embryos originate from vitrification procedures.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Assisted Hatching

Every treatment is built on a well-defined medical process, carefully structured and tailored to the individual needs of each case. The objective is for the patient to receive clear information, continuous support, and the assurance that every stage is explained in detail—from the initial consultation to the subsequent monitoring period. The entire journey is guided with professionalism, ensuring that medical decisions are made with full understanding.

Although procedures vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the individual situation and the establishment of a personalized strategy. This approach increases the real chances of success and ensures continuity of care throughout the entire journey toward becoming a parent.

Assisted Hatching
During the initial consultation, I will review your previous IVF cycle and the way embryos developed in earlier attempts, in order to determine whether assisted hatching may offer an advantage for your next transfer. At this stage, we will discuss in detail the indications, benefits, and optimal timing of the procedure.
You will undergo a standard IVF or ICSI cycle, which includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilisation in the laboratory. Embryos are cultured until day 3 or day 5, depending on the clinical situation, so that we can assess the most suitable moment for assisted hatching.
On the day of embryo transfer, the embryologist creates a small opening in the outer shell of the embryo using a precision laser or a micromanipulation tool. The procedure is performed under a microscope and allows the embryo to continue its development and implantation with reduced effort.
The embryo prepared through assisted hatching is transferred into the uterus using a gentle, painless procedure performed under ultrasound guidance. Depending on the outcome, additional embryos may be frozen for future use.
Approximately two weeks after the transfer, a blood test is performed to confirm whether implantation occurred and whether the procedure has resulted in a pregnancy.

F.A.Q.

Assisted Hatching F.A.Q.

Starting a treatment or medical procedure often raises questions regarding safety, effectiveness, and its impact on fertility. This section provides general explanations to help patients better understand the working steps, what the procedure involves, and what results to expect. The information is presented in an accessible manner to facilitate a clearer understanding of the medical process.

If additional questions arise or if the individual situation requires specific clarifications, a direct discussion with the physician can offer personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to each case. Proper guidance supports informed decision-making and ensures that treatment proceeds safely.

No. I recommend the procedure only in specific situations—for example, in patients of advanced maternal age, those with previous unsuccessful embryo transfers, or when frozen embryos are used and the outer shell may have become firmer.
In certain cases, yes. For carefully selected patients, the procedure can enhance the embryo’s ability to attach to the uterine lining. I will analyse your situation and let you know whether it is appropriate.
Yes. When performed by an experienced embryologist under controlled laboratory conditions, assisted hatching is considered safe and does not compromise embryo integrity. The risk of complications is extremely low.
No. The indication depends on embryo quality, developmental stage, and treatment history. We select only those embryos for which the procedure is expected to provide a real benefit.
Yes. Assisted hatching is frequently recommended for frozen embryos because the cryopreservation process may stiffen the zona pellucida, making natural hatching more difficult.
No special rest is required. The transfer process remains the same, and unless I give a specific recommendation, you may resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
