In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) is an advanced assisted reproduction technique in which oocytes are retrieved at an immature stage and subsequently matured in the laboratory. This approach reduces the need for intensive ovarian stimulation and can serve as a valuable alternative for patients who cannot undergo conventional stimulation protocols.

What is In Vitro Maturation (IVM)?

IVM is a procedure in which oocytes are collected at an early developmental stage and then matured in a controlled laboratory environment. The method is beneficial for patients who present risks associated with hormonal treatments or who cannot follow a traditional IVF protocol.

This technique allows the retrieval of oocytes without exposure to high doses of hormones, being particularly useful in cases with an increased risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome or situations where ovarian function is unpredictable.

In Vitro Maturation can be integrated into a broader therapeutic protocol and may include fertilization of the matured oocytes followed by embryo transfer, depending on the recommendations established during consultation.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

Every treatment is built on a well-defined medical process, carefully structured and tailored to the individual needs of each case. The objective is for the patient to receive clear information, continuous support, and the assurance that every stage is explained in detail—from the initial consultation to the subsequent monitoring period. The entire journey is guided with professionalism, ensuring that medical decisions are made with full understanding.

Although procedures vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the individual situation and the establishment of a personalized strategy. This approach increases the real chances of success and ensures continuity of care throughout the entire journey toward becoming a parent.

Blastocyst Transfer
During the initial consultation, the fertility specialist will assess whether IVM is an appropriate option for your medical profile, considering your medical history, ovarian reserve and hormone values. You will receive clear explanations regarding each stage of the treatment and its potential benefits.
Depending on the protocol, you may follow a short treatment with low doses of hormones or no stimulation medication at all. The goal is to retrieve immature oocytes directly from the ovaries, avoiding the risks associated with intense ovarian stimulation.
Immature oocytes are retrieved through a short procedure performed under light sedation. Afterwards, they are cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions and left to mature for 24–48 hours until they reach the optimal stage for fertilization.
After maturation, the oocytes are fertilized using ICSI or conventional IVF techniques, depending on medical indication. The embryos are then cultured for several days until they reach the appropriate stage for selection and transfer.
Any remaining embryos may be frozen for future use.
Approximately two weeks after the transfer, a blood test is performed to confirm whether implantation occurred and a pregnancy has been achieved.

F.A.Q.

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) F.A.Q.

Starting a treatment or medical procedure often raises questions regarding safety, effectiveness, and its impact on fertility. This section provides general explanations to help patients better understand the working steps, what the procedure involves, and what results to expect. The information is presented in an accessible manner to facilitate a clearer understanding of the medical process.

If additional questions arise or if the individual situation requires specific clarifications, a direct discussion with the physician can offer personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to each case. Proper guidance supports informed decision-making and ensures that treatment proceeds safely.

In IVF, oocytes mature naturally inside the body through hormonal stimulation. In IVM, immature oocytes are retrieved earlier and mature in the laboratory before fertilization.
Yes. IVM significantly reduces the risks associated with administering high doses of hormones and is an excellent option for patients predisposed to complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
Success rates may be slightly lower compared to conventional IVF, but IVM remains an effective and much safer alternative for properly selected patients.
Yes. Embryos obtained and fertilized through IVM can be frozen for future cycles, just like in standard IVF.
No. Oocyte retrieval is performed under light sedation, is usually well tolerated, and is followed by a rapid recovery.
IVM is not recommended for patients who need a large number of mature oocytes or who would benefit more from a full ovarian stimulation protocol. Your doctor will recommend the option best suited to your clinical situation.
