Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)

GIFT and ZIFT are assisted reproductive procedures that involve placing gametes or the zygote directly into the fallopian tubes. These methods were developed for situations in which natural fertilisation or embryo transport is impaired, offering an intermediate solution between spontaneous conception and modern IVF techniques.

What is Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)?

GIFT and ZIFT involve the early-stage placement of either oocytes and sperm (GIFT) or the already-fertilised zygote (ZIFT) directly into the fallopian tube. This allows fertilisation and early embryo development to continue in an environment as close to natural conditions as possible.

GIFT is used when fertilisation is preferred to occur inside the body, whereas ZIFT involves laboratory fertilisation before the zygote is transferred. Both procedures are performed laparoscopically and are recommended in selected cases, depending on individual medical circumstances.

In certain situations, these procedures can serve as an alternative when conventional methods are not sufficient; however, they are used increasingly less frequently in favour of modern IVF techniques. Still, in suitable scenarios, GIFT and ZIFT can provide an effective therapeutic option.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT)

Every treatment is built on a well-defined medical process, carefully structured and tailored to the individual needs of each case. The objective is for the patient to receive clear information, continuous support, and the assurance that every stage is explained in detail—from the initial consultation to the subsequent monitoring period. The entire journey is guided with professionalism, ensuring that medical decisions are made with full understanding.

Although procedures vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the individual situation and the establishment of a personalized strategy. This approach increases the real chances of success and ensures continuity of care throughout the entire journey toward becoming a parent.

Blastocyst Transfer
During the first meeting, we will analyze your medical history, uterine tubal status, and overall reproductive health. I will explain in detail the GIFT and ZIFT procedures to determine whether these options are appropriate for your situation.
You will follow a hormonal stimulation protocol to produce multiple oocytes. Throughout the process, you will undergo regular ultrasounds and blood tests so that follicular development can be monitored safely.
Oocytes are collected laparoscopically under anesthesia, while sperm is collected and prepared for use on the same day, ensuring everything is properly synchronized.
GIFT: Oocytes and sperm are placed directly into the fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs naturally. ZIFT: Fertilization takes place in the laboratory, after which the resulting zygotes are transferred into the fallopian tubes. I will explain each difference in detail to help you fully understand the process.
After the procedure, you will have a short resting period. Our medical team will monitor your recovery and schedule your pregnancy test.
Approximately two weeks after the transfer, a blood test will be performed to confirm whether implantation has occurred and a pregnancy has begun.

F.A.Q.

Gamete/Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT/ZIFT) F.A.Q.

Starting a treatment or medical procedure often raises questions regarding safety, effectiveness, and its impact on fertility. This section provides general explanations to help patients better understand the working steps, what the procedure involves, and what results to expect. The information is presented in an accessible manner to facilitate a clearer understanding of the medical process.

If additional questions arise or if the individual situation requires specific clarifications, a direct discussion with the physician can offer personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to each case. Proper guidance supports informed decision-making and ensures that treatment proceeds safely.

GIFT involves placing oocytes and sperm directly into the fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs naturally. ZIFT involves fertilizing the oocytes in the laboratory, followed by transferring the zygotes into the tubes. The main difference is where fertilization happens.
These procedures may be preferred by patients who want a process that more closely resembles natural conception or who have ethical or religious concerns regarding IVF. Compatibility is determined individually, based on your medical situation.
Much less frequently than in the past. They are recommended only in specific cases, as IVF provides greater control over the entire process. However, in certain situations, GIFT or ZIFT can still be suitable alternatives.
Yes. Both procedures involve laparoscopic surgery under anesthesia to access the fallopian tubes, unlike IVF, which uses transcervical embryo transfer.
For appropriately selected patients, success rates can be comparable. Outcomes depend on factors such as age, diagnosis, oocyte quality, and the number of embryos available for transfer.
In general, ZIFT is performed with fresh embryos, but in certain cases, frozen embryos may be used depending on medical recommendations and your treatment plan.
