Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)

PGT-A is an advanced genetic testing procedure performed on embryos within IVF treatments to identify possible numerical chromosomal abnormalities. Through this analysis, embryos with a normal chromosomal distribution are selected, which can significantly increase the chances of achieving a viable pregnancy.

What is Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)?

PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies) is a genetic analysis performed on a small number of cells taken from the embryo without affecting its development. The aim of the procedure is to detect aneuploidies—changes in the number of chromosomes—that may prevent implantation or lead to pregnancy loss.

This testing is performed at the blastocyst stage, when the embryo allows the safe extraction of a few cells from the trophectoderm. The genetic material is then analyzed using advanced techniques such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for a comprehensive evaluation of the chromosomal set.

PGT-A provides essential information about each embryo’s reproductive potential, allowing prioritization of embryos with a normal chromosomal structure and improving IVF outcomes.

Who is Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A) for?

Woman over 35 considering PGT-A testing to reduce the risk of chromosomal

Women of advanced reproductive age, where the risk of aneuploidy increases with age.

Woman holding a heart symbolizing miscarriage and the need for PGT-A testing.

Couples who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss or failed implantations during IVF cycles.

Situations in which selecting embryos with a normal chromosomal structure is desired to increase the chances of success.

Treatment steps

Your step-by-step guide to Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)

Every treatment is built on a well-defined medical process, carefully structured and tailored to the individual needs of each case. The objective is for the patient to receive clear information, continuous support, and the assurance that every stage is explained in detail—from the initial consultation to the subsequent monitoring period. The entire journey is guided with professionalism, ensuring that medical decisions are made with full understanding.

Although procedures vary depending on each patient’s diagnosis, treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the individual situation and the establishment of a personalized strategy. This approach increases the real chances of success and ensures continuity of care throughout the entire journey toward becoming a parent.

Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A)
During the first meeting, we will review your medical history, particularities of previous cycles, and the results of investigations performed so far. I will explain in detail in which situations PGT-A testing brings real benefits to the IVF plan and how it helps us select the embryos with the highest implantation potential. This is the time when we can discuss, without rush, all your questions.
You will undergo a full IVF or ICSI cycle, which involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and fertilization in the laboratory. The resulting embryos will be cultivated up to the blastocyst stage, the moment when they can be analyzed and prepared for testing.
From each blastocyst, a few cells are carefully collected from the outer layer, without affecting the inner cell mass. The samples are sent to a specialized genetic laboratory, where chromosomal analysis is performed. The embryos remain safely frozen in our cryobank throughout this process.
After receiving the results, we will review the test conclusions together and select the embryos that present a normal chromosomal structure and the best prognosis for implantation. We will go step-by-step through all details.
The selected embryo is thawed and transferred into the uterus through a gentle, quick, and painless procedure performed under ultrasound guidance. Patients generally tolerate this step easily.
Approximately two weeks after the transfer, you will take a blood test to determine whether implantation occurred and a pregnancy has been achieved.

F.A.Q.

Aneuploidy Screening (PGT-A) F.A.Q.

Starting a treatment or medical procedure often raises questions regarding safety, effectiveness, and its impact on fertility. This section provides general explanations to help patients better understand the working steps, what the procedure involves, and what results to expect. The information is presented in an accessible manner to facilitate a clearer understanding of the medical process.

If additional questions arise or if the individual situation requires specific clarifications, a direct discussion with the physician can offer personalized guidance and recommendations tailored to each case. Proper guidance supports informed decision-making and ensures that treatment proceeds safely.

No. PGT-A reduces the risk of chromosomal abnormalities but cannot exclude all genetic conditions or the development of issues later in pregnancy. It helps increase the chances of a viable pregnancy but does not offer absolute guarantees.
Yes. The procedure is performed by experienced embryologists using modern techniques that minimize the risk of harming the embryo. The incidence of complications is extremely low.
No. PGT-A is recommended in specific situations, such as advanced maternal age, recurrent pregnancy loss, prior chromosomal abnormalities, or unsuccessful IVF cycles. We will discuss together whether it is suitable for your case.
Results are usually available within 1–2 weeks. During this time, embryos are safely stored in cryogenic conditions in our laboratory.
PGT-A can identify the chromosomal sex of the embryos. However, selecting embryos based on sex is legally permitted only for medical reasons, depending on local regulations.
In many situations, yes. By avoiding the transfer of embryos with chromosomal abnormalities, it reduces the risk of miscarriage and increases the likelihood of achieving an ongoing pregnancy.
